USAToday Snapshots®
Big Brother at work

Many workers don’t realize that there is little on-the-job privacy protection. Some mistakenly believe they take their constitutional rights with them when they go to work. Workers must remember that the spaces in which they work belong to their employers, not to them. As you review the SNAPSHOT at left, consider why employers might want to use such surveillance tactics on their employees? Are employers monitoring to check on work performance and production? Are they looking at company loyalty? Do you think employers should tell employees when and how they are being monitored? Do you think the privacy laws that protect people in their homes should extend to the workplace? How would you feel if you discovered your employer was monitoring your e-mail and telephone calls? Would you feel betrayed or paranoid? Discuss these issues with your classmates, and share ideas for workplace privacy protection laws that you think legislators should enact.
