USA TODAY Elective is a Big Hit at Pennsylvania High School

Bill Ziegler, Vice Principal
Pottstown High School
Pottstown, PA

"For the past three years, educators at Pottstown High School in Pennsylvania have taught an integrated, elective course titled "USA TODAY." Nearly 140 students out of 700 are involved in the class. It is the number one elective at PHS each year. The USA TODAY course originated in the summer of 1995 when Reed Lindly, Principal of PHS and Liane Heydt, Curriculum Director for Pottstown School District desired to develop a course that is student-centered, multi-disciplined and interactive. USA TODAY was selected as the daily, integrated resource for the course due to its national and balanced perspective, concise style, user-friendly format and daily print and online education resources.

The course is centered on process-learning and focuses on the multiple intelligences. Goals are to address standards and teach students to: think critically, communicate both orally and in writing, access and organize information, work cooperatively, develop effective research skills and utilize technology."
