Title: Ms.Chien.com
Description: MsChien.com has been "in business" for the past 2 years. It is used in multiple ways; students can check for updates on assignments and use the references section for guided research. There is a special page for parents to check out the latest in science class, school important dates, and extra readings about supporting parents at home in science. In addition, there is a form for parents who needs to email "on the spot". The site is also used as a portal (research links, template downloads) for online projects such as the development of the Water Quality Project published on Thirteen's Students Take http://www.thirteen.org/edonline/studentstake/water/index.html and the Herbarium Project. Student work is periodically published as well. Most importantly, part to this online classroom is the high amount of email that the parents and teacher exchange. Communication is quick and easy, especially for working parents in NYC. I always mass email parents about the latest assignment, trip information, and class announcements even before the students know! Parents really appreciate the open communication, and as a result, the amount of family involvement in science class is extremely high. I receive over 40% parent attendance during parent-teachers night. Parents who hardly touch the computer had train themselves, and their kids, to web surf and email just so that they are "on track". Mschien.com is a tool that definitely moves kids into current web technology communication and makes them become active young scientists.
